Artists’ Work Environments

The Swedish Arts Grants Committee has published a new report showing that many professionally active artists face more precarious working conditions than other groups in the labour market, despite their high level of skills. The report, Artists’ Work Environments, is based on a survey of artists across several artistic disciplines.

The findings show that the majority work on a freelance basis. While this can offer considerable freedom, it also affects their security and work environment. The report highlights periods of stress as well as continued exposure to discrimination, harassment and sexual harassment.

In light of the findings, the Swedish Arts Grants Committee highlights the need to strengthen contractual frameworks, ensure fair remuneration and make social security systems work more effectively for professionally active artists.
