The process in focus: Åsa Ersmark

The process in focus with IASPI’s residency grantee Åsa Ersmark and Elina Suoyrjö, director of Titanic art space in Turku, Finland.

Photo. Still from the 16 mm film Hekate rising by Åsa Ersmark.

You are warmly invited to take part in a discussion with a small group of professionals that takes its point of departure in the artistic practice of Åsa Ersmark. The discussion is part of the format “Focusing on the process”, initiated by the Iaspis to create an opportunity to talk in depth about artistic processes from an international perspective.

As a current grant holder at the Iaspis residence programme in Stockholm, Åsa Ersmark is in the process of creating new works for her upcoming solo show at Uppsala Art Museum in 2018. You will be given an exclusive chance to experience Ersmark´s new 16 mm film Hekate Rising, never screened before.
Elina Suoyrjö will be joining us for the afternoon. She has over the years been one of Åsa Ersmark´s closest discussion partners, for example writing several of Ersmark´s exhibition texts.

Åsa Ersmark´s works explore the concepts of freedom and sexuality, as well as the subconscious´s place and explosiveness in a patriarchal consumption-driven age. She works with film, installation, photography, handmade objects, animation and the human body.

In a pine forest loaded with mushrooms an encounter with the godess Hekate emerges. In a moonlit bed inspired by the moon scene in Les Amants by Louis Malle the meaning of a woman´s beauty is transformed. The only actor in the film is asleep, dreamed of, outdoors on a dreamy meadow. In an image-driven tribute to analogue film, poetry and psychedlia the Godess Hekate is evoked. A psychedelic love story about eternal love originating from a feminine and prehistoric power.

The voice in the film utilizes desire and ASMR-technic (autonomous sensory meridian response), a seductiveness normally described as female, which is mostly allowed to exist and express itself in relation to a traditional cis male desire. Instead of giving pleasure on request the voice expresses its erotic power to invoke the Godess Hekate.
