Filmvisning med Cristina Picchi

Välkommen till en visning av tre filmer av filmskaparen, konstnären och IASPIS-stipendiaten Cristina Picchi. Visningen introduceras av konstnären och följs av en frågestund som modereras av Lena Malm.

Cristina Picchis verk svävar på gränsen mellan verklighet och fiktion och hon kombinerar dokumentär- och spelfilmer, videoinstallationer och manus som reflekterar kring begreppen rymd, minne, identitet och tillhörighet, uthållighet, förgänglighet och sårbarhet. Under det senaste decenniet har hon huvudsakligen arbetat inom området kreativ och experimentell dokumentär, och utforskat formatets gränser genom konceptbaserade och forskningsledda projekt. Hennes filmer, som ofta fokuserar på relationen mellan människor och deras miljöer, kännetecknas av ett ständigt intresse för landskap och kontemplativa bilder, uppslukande ljudlandskap och av subjektiv användning av faktamaterial för att skapa nya samband och betydelser. På senare år har hon utökat sin undersökande och produktion inom regi och manus för spelfilm och inom dokumentärbaserade videoinstallationer.

Under visningen presenteras filmerna Zima (experimentell dokumentär, 12 min, 2013), Champ des Possibles  (experimentell dokumentär, 14 min., 2015) och Unfolded (kortfilm, 12 min., 2019). Avslutningsvis presenteras utdrag från hennes undersökande inför hennes senaste project About The End, producerat av Costanza Julia Bani för Fasad (SE) och med finansiering från Svenska filminstitutet och Sundance Institute (11 min).

Zima (experimental documentary, RUS, 2013, 12 min.), part of the project
Cinetrain – Russian Winter. A portrait of a season – a journey through North Russia and Siberia, through the feelings and thoughts of the people who have to cope with one of the world’s harshest climates; a reality where the boundary between life and death is so thin that is sometimes almost nonexistent, where civilization constantly both fights and embraces nature and its timeless rules and rites. A reflection on fate, adaptation and the immutable cycles of existence.

Champ des Possibles (experimental documentary, CAN/ITA/SWE, 2015, 14 min.). A contemporary city symphony where floating memories blend with urban sounds and the natural elements, where tales of loss and love are mirrored by the demolition and construction of new buildings, where death and birth stand next to each other, like the darkest hour of the night and the first lights of the day, and the net of the streets holds tight all the possibilities that life might unfold.

Unfolded (short fiction film, ITA/LIT, 2019, 15 min.). UNFOLDED (short fiction film, ITA/LIT, 2019). After a sleepless night, a woman leaves her house determined to put an end to her tormented relationship. But some memories are not so easy to leave behind. An intimate portrait of a soul suspended between the cathartic power of a new chance and the nostalgia of an unretrievable past.

Cristina Picchi will also share some research material extracts from her latest project, the creative feature documentary ABOUT THE END, produced by Costanza Julia Bani for Fasad (Sweden) and supported by the Swedish Film Institute and the Sundance Institute (11 min).

Cristina Picchi is an award-winning Italian filmmaker, artist and writer. She wrote, directed and edited films that were screened in festivals such as Locarno, Venice, San Francisco, Edinburgh and many more, and in art spaces such as the National Portrait Gallery of London, winning numerous prizes. Her short Zima (2013) premiered at Locarno Film Festival where it won the Silver Leopard and a nomination at the European Film Awards as Best Short Film. Champ des Possibles (2015) premiered at Venice Film Festival and Unfolded (2019) was nominated at the Italian Academy Awards. She is the recipient of the residency programs of the European Media Art Network in Montreal, La Cité internationale des arts in Paris, the Museumsquartier in Vienna and the winner of the Kooshk artist residency award in Teheran, among others. Cristina is also an alumna of Berlinale Talents, IDFAcademy and Torino Film Lab. After a degree and an MA in European Literature from the University of Pisa, she gained a master’s degree in Screen Documentary from Goldsmiths University of London. Picchi is currently developing a feature creative documentary, About The End, exploring apocalyptic scenarios and fantasies in different communities and continents. The film was nominated for the Solinas Scriptwriting Prize and is supported by the Swedish Film Institute and the Sundance Institute.
