Anothony Dunne and Fiona Raby

Studio grant holders in Stockholm 2 September –  19 November 2022

Anthony Dunne and Fiona Raby are University Professors of Design and Social Inquiry and co-directors of the Designed Realities Lab at Parsons/The New School in New York. They are also partners in the design studio Dunne & Raby. During their IASPIS residency they will work on new sections of their ongoing project, An Archive of Impossible Objects.

Anthony was professor and head of the Design Interactions programme at the Royal College of Art in London from 2005 – 2015. He received a B.Des in Industrial Design from the National College College of Art and Design in Dublin, an M.Des in Industrial Design and a Ph.D in Computer Related Design from the Royal College of Art. Anthony was awarded the Sir Misha Black Award for Innovation in Design Education in 2009.

Fiona was professor of Industrial Design at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna from 2011 – 2015 and Reader in Design Interactions at the Royal College of Art between 2011 and 2015. She received a B.A (hons) in Architecture from Birmingham School of Architecture, an MA in Architecture and an M.Phil in Computer Related Design from the Royal College of Art.

Their projects include Technological Dream Series, No 1; Robots, Designs For An Over Populated Planet; Foragers, The United Micro Kingdoms (UMK), and The School of Constructed Realities. They have written several books including Hertzian Tales, Design Noir, and Speculative Everything. Their work has been exhibited at MoMA in New York, the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and the Design Museum in London, and is in several permanent collections including MoMA, the Victoria and Albert Museum, and the MAK in Vienna. Dunne & Raby received the inaugural MIT Media Lab Award in 2015, and in 2021, Fiona and Anthony were awarded the title Royal Designers for Industry by the Royal Society of Arts.
