Yishay Garbasz
Studio grant holder in Stockholm 4 June – 29 August 2022
Yishay Garbasz is a Berlin-based interdisciplinary artist. Her work explores culturally-specific inheritance of traumatic memories and she is driven by a desire to reveal the darkest sides of humanity and to use her practice to illuminate them. Working with marginalised communities and in areas affected by war and disaster, she engages in a continual process of making the invisible visible, seeing the unsightly with tenderness.
Her work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums internationally, including Tokyo, Seoul, New York, Miami, Boston, Berlin, Paris, London, and at the Busan Biennale. Yishay Garbasz has produced two monographs and is working on a third. The first monograph was nominated for the Deutsch photo book prize. She won Berlin Woman Filmmaker of the Year in 2010 and is a Thomas Watson fellow. She is featured in Phaidon’s recent book Great Women Artists and Prestel’s upcoming Citizen Woman: An IllustratedHhistory of the Women’s Movement.
