Maja Fredin

Artist in residence, Stockholm, November 2026–April 2027

Maja Fredin, born in Uppsala and based in Stockholm, is an artist whose work is equally rooted in concept and material. Through performance, installation, video, and sound, she constructs conceptual worlds to approach the unfathomable nature of the contemporary human experience. Blending rancid kitsch with profound gravity, glitter with darkness, she opens up reality to interpretation, posing questions about consumerism, desire, decay, and the longing for the unattainable.

Driving her artistic practice is a constant search for the Holy Grail of our time: authenticity— if such a thing even exists.

Maja Fredin studied at Nyckelviksskolan, Handarbetets Vänner (Friends of Handicraft), and Konstfack, where she earned her Master’s degree in Textile Art in 2022. In 2023, she was awarded the Maria Bonnier Dahlin Foundation grant for young artists and has since exhibited at institutions such as KiN (Konstmuseet i Norr), Uppsala Art Museum, and Norrtälje Konsthall. This year, she is participating in the Jeune création Internationale at the Lyon Art Biennale with her ongoing project, “Broiler.”

Fredin will continue to delve into the “Broiler” project during her residency at IASPIS. “Broiler” is a lifestyle project in which Fredin examines the qualities of bodybuilding and the wellness industry as a poor adhesive holding together our fractured welfare state. For two years, she has undergone a bodily metamorphosis, living as a bodybuilder and competing in the Body Fitness category. Notes, videos, diaries, objects, and training logs are being compiled. Like an alchemist of the flesh, she hopes to discover something of greater value within the dream of infinite muscle growth.
