Hampus Jan-Michael is a visual artist based in Stockholm, working across painting, drawing, collage, and text. His practice explores the relationship between seeing, feeling, and memory. Hampus’ painting investigates how images are shaped by perception, memory, and lived experience. Rather than seeking to reproduce reality, he uses colour, light, surface, space, and shifting perspectives to intensify and transform the experience of seeing itself. His work engages with themes of memory, life, death, desire, love, and time, while also opening up questions around identity, the body, and queer experience. Through shifting perspectives and spatial installations, multiple ways of looking, moments, and experiences are allowed to exist simultaneously.
For Hampus, painting is a way of looking closely — at himself, at others, at images, and at the world — while remaining open to the possibility that the act of seeing can itself transform what is being looked at. During his residency at IASPIS, Hampus will further develop his practice within figurative painting and work towards a new series of paintings.
Hampus Jan-Michael received his Bachelor’s degree in Fine Art from Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm in 2025. In 2024, he also studied at Trondheim Kunstakademi through KUNO. His work has been exhibited in Sweden and internationally, including Liljevalchs Konsthall (2026), Sandvikens Konsthall (2026), Borlänge Konsthall (2026), Husby Konsthall (2026), and Kulturhuset Stockholm (2025). In 2023, he created the public mural Daisy for the Swedish Transport Administration in Gothenburg. He was awarded Hörselskadas Riksförbunds Kulturpris 2021 (HRF’s Cultural Award, 2021).
