Laura Vargas
Artist in Residence, Stockholm 4 September 2024 – 15 November 2024
Lauda (Laura) Virginia Vargas is a multidisciplinary artist whose practice uses sculpture, drawing, and collage. Her work intersects cartography, spirituality, belonging, and memory, with a particular focus on the Caribbean archipelago’s temporal qualities and its ongoing journey towards liberation.
During her residency at IASPIS, Lauda will investigate the continued imperial occupation of the Dominican Republic and Haiti through baseball cards, military maps, postcards, and the tourism industry. By dismantling and reconfiguring colonial and personal archives, she explores Caribbean imaginaries amidst the living ruins of European and American imperialism.
Vargas was born in 1992 in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. She holds a Master of Architecture from The Royal Danish Academy. She has exhibited in “Compact. Time. Constraint” at Gallery 45m2 in Prague (2022), and “Research as Ritual” at Sharp Projects in Copenhagen (2021). Her work has been featured in publications such as The Funambulist and Disc Journal.
