Invoicing companies

An invoicing company is an intermediary between you and the client.

A mix between being self-employed and being an employee is to hire an invoicing company to manage your billing. Sometimes referred to as a self-employment company, it acts as an intermediary between you and the client.

Here’s how it works:

  1. You, as an artist, acquire the client and the commission.
  2. The invoicing company signs a business agreement with the client and an employment contract with you.
  3. You will receive a general fixed-term contract during the assignment and a salary.
  4. The invoicing company takes a percentage of your fee and usually has employer responsibility for the duration of the agreement.

Not suitable for more extensive activities

This solution does not work well if your artistic practice is more extensive. In that case, it is better to bill clients through your own company. You can hire an accounting firm to manage the administration. Another option is to ask the client to pay the compensation as salary.

Find out if you can get unemployment benefits

In order to qualify for unemployment benefits, you as an employee must have as little personal responsibility as possible and be under the control of the employer. Therefore, it is important that you contact your unemployment insurance fund before choosing an invoicing company to find out how it will work for you. There is a risk that you will not be able to receive unemployment insurance, because in many cases you are viewed as an independent contractor despite your formal employment. You are then equated with being a business owner.
