The Swedish Arts Grants Committee’s International Programme for Visual and Applied Artists, IASPIS, collaborates with a range of residency programmes around the world. In addition to a workspace or studio, the artist-in-residence will get access to housing and a stipend to cover travel and living expenses during their stay. The purpose of our residencies abroad is to support artists’ opportunities to create, develop and nurture their contacts outside Sweden.

Description of the residency programme

The MMCA Residency Changdong in Seoul is an international artist-in-residence programme run by the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA). Established in 2002, it offers residency exchange opportunities through partnerships with art and cultural institutions worldwide. The residency supports artists working with a wide range of materials, methods, and artistic approaches. Its aim is to strengthen artistic practice, foster exchange between local and international practitioners, and support the development of professional networks across borders. MMCA Changdong provides a productive working environment and facilitates dialogue between artists and other art professionals, including curators and critics. Residents take part in an international programme that brings together artists and researchers from Korea and abroad. Open Studios are held twice a year, during which residents present their work in the residency’s exhibition spaces.

    Application on paper

  • When we receive your application, we verify that you meet all the formal requirements. Members of the international panel of the Visual Artists’ Fund will then read your application. The members are practising artists or experts in the field of visual arts. At least two people read each application. A shortlist of five candidates for the Seoul residency is selected by the international panel of the Visual Artists’ Fund. From the list of proposals, MMCA selects one grant holder and one reserve-grant-holder. This decision is then formalised by the Visual Artists’ Fund, through its chairperson.

If a member has a conflict of interest in relation to an applicant, that member is forbidden from participating in the review process or award decision for that application.

    How is your decision made?
We select grant recipients based on the quality of artistic activities and the applicant’s financial need. This means that we assess the quality of the work samples and reference material that you submit. At the same time, we make an assessment of your financial need. This can mean, for example, that we do not prioritise an applicant who has a high income or has recently received other grants or stipends.

In our selection, we aim to distribute the grants to artists in different parts of the country and across a variety of artistic expressions.

  • The grant does not need to be reported financially, but the grant holder send a report about the stay after returning home.

  • The grant is exempt from tax.

  • If you are awarded a grant for the residency programme, you must state in all communications about your residency that it was carried out with the support of the Swedish Arts Grants Committee. Please use the wording “with support from IASPIS, the Swedish Arts Grants Committee´s International Programme for Visual and Applied Arts.”

Use the IASPIS  logo in the appropriate contexts.
