Welcome to join a 3-day intensive workshop led by artist Laia Abril. Through the lens of her research-based practice, Abril will share key strategies and methodologies for the investigation and construction of complex narratives. Participants will delve into how conceptualization and interpretation of facts—across photography, video, text, and mixed media—can transform ideas into powerful, multidisciplinary artistic projects.
Abril has developed a collaborative and critical approach to narrative building. Participants will examine some of her most relevant case studies, gaining insight into how facts, ethics, and storytelling interweave across platforms. Together, they will reflect on topics such as authorship, the architecture of narrative, and the politics of form and medium.
The workshop will function as a lab for experimentation, where participants are encouraged to bring a work-in-progress: this may include an existing body of work, a book dummy, or an installation proposal. Those at an earlier stage may instead focus on developing a conceptual framework and research methodology. In both cases, participants will be supported in expanding the narrative potential of their projects beyond the photographic image.
This workshop is aimed at artists, photographers, designers, writers, and researchers from diverse disciplines interested in narrative construction, long-term projects, and the relationship between form and content. The exchange of experiences, methodologies, and perspectives will serve as the foundation for group dialogue, critique, and creation.
Laia Abril (b. 1986, Spain) is an internationally acclaimed artist who works research-based with photography, text, sound and video. Abril often highlights politics and gender issues through a politically engaged, process-driven method. Her work has been exhibited in over 25 countries and is in collections such as the Centre Pompidou, Photo Elysée and Fotomuseum Winterthur. She has also written several books, including the series A History of Misogyny: On Abortion, On Rape and On Mass Hysteria.
The workshop is a collaboration between IASPIS, the Swedish Arts Grants Committee`s International Programme for Visual and Applied Arts, KKV Härnösand and Triennalen Västernorrland.
The Triennal runs from June 14th to September 21st at nine locations in Västernorrland. It’s a contemporary art festival that takes its cue from the witch trials of 1675, which were the worst in Swedish history.
