Samir Laghouati-Rashwan

Artist in Residence, Stockholm, 2 June–25 August 2025

Samir Laghouati-Rashwan is an artist who creates narratives from archival work, using media such as film, photography and sculpture. His work explores the politics of space and bodies, with a particular focus on representations of the Other, the body and race in mediated cultural productions and institutional art spaces. With a tone that oscillates between amusement and vulnerability, he traces marginalized or forgotten histories and explores geographical displacement and linguistic reappropriation as testimony to systems of domination. His installations are characterized by fluorescent and acid colors, creating situations both realistic and phantasmagorical.

During his IASPIS residency, he will continue his research into the form of his Slowness as a resistance project, which considers slowness as a form of resistance to hyper-productivity and capitalism through the practice of Dj Screw, a native of Houston, Texas, and the low-rider community of the Texan capital.

Laghouati-Rashwan has been exhibited and performed internationally in galleries and institutions such as MRAC Sérignan (Sérignan, FR) 2024, MEP (Paris, FR) 2024, Material (Mexico, MX) 2024, Usine C (Montréal, CA) 2024, NGBK (Berlin, DE) 2024, P21 Gallery (London, UK) 2023, Les Urbaines (Lausanne, CH) 2023, CAC Brétigny (Bretigny, FR) 2023, Kadist Fondation (Paris, FR) 2022, Magasins Généraux (Pantin, FR) 2022, Rencontres d’Arles (Arles, FR) 2023, Manifesta 13 Biennale (Marseille, FR) 2021, Triangle-Astérides (Marseille, FR) 2024, Art-O-Rama fair (Marseille, FR) 2024, SISSI club (Marseille, FR) 2023.
