Mats Hjelm

Artist in Residence at ISCP in New York, January – March 2026

Mats Hjelm (b. 1959) is a Stockholm-based artist working with large-scale video installations, documentary film, and public multimedia artworks. His practice explores the boundaries between art and social justice movements, video installation and documentary traditions, and personal and global political narratives. He has worked extensively in Europe, West Africa, the United States, Brazil, India, and Tunisia.

Hjelm’s work has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the 1st Yokohama Triennale, Japan; 8th Bamako Encounters – The African Biennale of Photography, Mali; 45th Venice Biennale, Italy; Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Museum of African American History, Detroit; Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris; Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM), Rio de Janeiro; Dubai International Film Festival; and Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal, Canada.

Hjelm is represented in several private and public collections, including Moderna Museet, Malmö Art Museum, Uppsala Art Museum, Filmform, Norrtälje Art Museum, Museu de Arte Moderna (MAM), Rio de Janeiro, and the National Public Arts Council Sweden. He is currently represented by Cecilia Hillström Gallery, Stockholm.
