Christopher West

Artist in Residence, Stockholm, 5 May–28 October 2025

Christopher West is a graphic designer based in Stockholm. He has worked both as a freelancer and as part of creative teams at places like Stockholm Design Lab, Filippa K, and Arena magazine. As a freelancer, he has designed award-winning books, magazines, websites, and visual identities. In his work, Christopher often seeks a tension between the commercial and the artistic, with typography as his primary point of departure.

During his residency at IASPIS, Christopher will delve into a new field—type design. He has previously drawn typefaces in his own projects, as an intern with established designers, and on commission. During the grant period, he aims to master the entire process—from conceptual sketches to a fully functional digital typeface. Through discussions and workshops, he hopes to broaden his knowledge and perspectives. His goal is to establish a publishing platform for typefaces and to have fonts ready for launch by the end of the residency.

Christopher West studied graphic design at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam, graduating in 2009. After his studies, he lived and worked in Amsterdam until 2012, when he moved back to Stockholm. Since then, he has collaborated with clients such as OEI, Stockholm Design Lab, Filippa K, Arena magazine, Bigert & Bergström, Rodeo, Doberman, Weekday, Förlaget Arkitektur, Form Us With Love, Kohta Helsinki, Eytys, Amuse.io, and Byredo.

His work has been recognised with a Gold Egg Award in 2024 (as part of the creative team at Bedow), the Swedish Publishing Prize in 2016, and a Silver Award in the Best Corporate Publishing category in 2015. He is currently nominated for Svensk Bokkonst 2025. Christopher has also received a one-year working grant from the Swedish Arts Grants Committee and a cultural grant from the City of Stockholm (both in 2013), as well as a Startstipendium from the Fonds BKVB in the Netherlands (2010).
