Rodney Place
(b. 1952 South Africa) is a multi-disciplinary and multi-media artist who makes large-scale sculpture/land-art/urban projects. His work focuses mainly on art and urbanism, whether as satirical commentary, activism, or permanent installation. Place works thematically with different elements making up a project, fashion, photography, drawing, painting and sculpture, sound, video and performance. He has lived and worked in over 20 countries, presenting his work to a variety of audiences since the 1980s including Adelaide Festival (1996); World Wide Video Festival, Amsterdam (2001); Dakar Biennale (2002); Havana Biennale (2003); Dance Umbrella, Johannesburg (2004); ARTE’s Temps d’Images Festival, La Ferme du Buisson, Paris, and CCA, Warsaw (2005); and MuseumsQuartier, Vienna (2007). In 2009 he founded M-m (The South African Multi-media Arts Foundation) and worked with V2_ , Rotterdam, on a European/South African multi-media production, Angels of Stealth, an allegory of East-meets-West-meets-South in the post-Cold War period. He is currently working in South Africa and Sweden on a sound/sculpture installation and cabaret project, AnO (Armaments and Ornaments), with Ulvhälls Hällar, Strängnäs. Place studied at the Architectural Association in London in the 1970s.
