Fernanda Pitta

Expert visit in Stockholm 2 – 6 February 2019

Fernanda Pitta is Senior Curator at Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo and Lecturer in the History of Art at the Escola da Cidade, in São Paulo. She has a PhD in art history from the Universidade de São Paulo, with a dissertation titled "A Peaceful and Bucolic People: Customs and History in Almeida Júniorʼs paintings," which is forthcoming as a book by Martins Fontes Press.
Her research interests focus primarily on the reception of realist and naturalist trends in Brazilian painting in the second half of the nineteenth century and how this reception impacted the construction of a paradigm of national art. She also writes regularly on modern and contemporary art, including essays on Laercio Redondo, Ana Maria Tavares and Eleonore Koch, and catalogue entries on Sara Ramo, Hercules Barsotti and Luiz Sacilotto, among others. She contributes to scholarly journals on Brazilian art and art historiography.

Her latest curatorial project was “In the place itself: an anthology of Ana Maria Tavaresʼ work” at Pinacoteca de São Paulo in 2016-2017, and which was awarded the São Paulo Association of Art Critics Prize for Best Retrospective of 2016. She is currently an International Curators Fellow of the Association of Art Museums Curators International Foundation Engagement Program.

In the summer 2017, she was a fellow at Clark Art Institute as part of the Summer Collaborative Working Group, together with Laercio Redondo, Birger Lipinski, Valeria Piccoli, and UF professor Kaira Cabañas. There they developed research on narrative models for long-term exhibitions of national art collections, comparing the United States and Brazil. There they also developed the concept of Laercio Redondoʼs exhibition Relance, on view at Pinacoteca de São Paulo until February 25 2019.
