Maria Johansson

Studio Grantholder in Stockholm 1 October 2018 - 31 March 2019

Maria Johansson
(SWE), b. 1979 in Halland, Sweden) received her MA from Konstfack, University of Arts, Crafts and Design, Ceramics and Glass, in 2009. She lives and works in Stockholm.
Johansson’s artistic practice is built on her fascination for handy and inventive people she met growing up in the village of Nordanå. She collects, searches, disassembles, constructs, combines, enumerates, archives and reuses. Her sculptures, entitled Föremål (Objects), tell the story of her rise up the social ladder, from growing up in a working class family to her new life and the not entirely uncomplicated encounter with the art world. The Objects have no practical function; they both celebrate and criticise material society. Johansson does not design function but thoughts about function, acquisitiveness and consumption.
She has spent 12 years building “the collection of the perfect objects”. As they did not exist, she had to make them herself... The collection comprises 158 Objects. In her ongoing art projects, Johansson assumes the role of an archivist, documenting the collection in various ways. During her residency at Iaspis, she will begin working on a photo book.

Johansson has exhibited at, among others, Rian designmuseum, the Glass Factory and blås&knåda, and contributed to group shows in London, Tokyo, Bergen, Taipei, Gdynia and Prague, and in Sweden at Göteborgs Konsthall, ArcDes, Stockholm City Museum, Form Design Center and Konsthantverkarna. She is represented in the collections of the Public Art Agency Sweden, the Röhsska Museum and Rian designmuseum.
