Debora Elgeholm

Studio Grantholder in Stockholm 1 October 2018 - 31 March 2019
Debora Elgeholm (SWE), b. 1976, received her MA from the Valand Academy in Gothenburg, followed by further studies at the Royal Institute of Art, Stockholm.
In a project spanning several years, Elgeholm has explored the connection between the social climate and religious manifestations. She has particularly focused on how individuals may feel involved in top-level politics thanks to their beliefs. An example is missionary works, which are driven by a desire to disseminate the believers’ convictions to the world at large, as well as contributing to the development of healthcare and education.

In the period 1970-1990, Swedish missionary work reached its peak in Africa. At this time, Elgeholm’s parents worked in East Africa. Elgeholm is interested in the so-called “God’s calling” for missionaries. They experience themselves as chosen, coloured by exotic travel stories by the early missionaries of the late 19th century.

Elgeholm’s work has been exhibited at, among others, Gotland Art Museum; Röda Sten, Gothenburg; GIBCA Extended, Vänersborgs konsthall; Bodö Kunsthall (N); Center for Contemporary Art, Kiev; Antrepo No:5, Istanbul Biennial, and film festivals such as Uppsala Shortfilm Festival and Oberhausen Filmfestival.
