Sarah Dobai
’s practice is based in photography and film and has in recent years extended into publication and performance. Her work reflects on the central position of photography and cinema in relation to on-going debates around realism, illusionism and authorship.

Her recent production has used and repurposed existing works of cinema or literature as a means of exploring historical subject matter. The film Hidden in Plain Sight referred to Robert Bresson’s acclaimed film Pickpocket and her artist’s bookwork The Overcoat published by Four Corners Books, presents a body of her photographs alongside the full text of Nicolai Gogol’s darkly comic novella of 1842.
Dobai’s recent and forthcoming solo exhibitions and projects include Principles & Deceptions, Or Gallery, Vancouver (Canada) and the performance Bees in a Hive of Glass, a new commission for the UK’s Whitstable Biennale in collaboration with novelist Tom McCarthy. Other previous shows include The Vanishing Point in History, for L’ete Photographique de Lectoure  & performance/ screenings at The Photographers’ Gallery, Whitechapel Art Gallery and Spike Island, Bristol.  Previous solo and group shows include Twenty Second Hold and Studio/ Location Photographs, Works Projects, Bristol, City Lives, Bristol Museum & Art Gallery, Theatres of the Real, FotoMuseum Antwerp; Darkside II, FotoMuseum Winterthur, Switzerland, Troubled Water, Kuandu Museum of Fine Art, Taipei. Sarah Dobai completed an MFA at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver. She lives and works in London.
