Ana Mendes

Ana Mendes is a writer and visual artist dividing her time between London, UK and Berlin, Germany. She studied animation film at La Poudrière École du Film d’Animation, Valence, France (2008), photography at Bauhaus-Universität Weimar, Germany (2012) and completed an M. A. in Writing for Performance at Goldsmiths College, London in 2011. Having begun her career as a writer, she evolved gradually into visual arts. Her performance work started by accident, when she wrote Self-portrait, a play about her identity. Currently, she develops works in which she uses photography, video, text and installation to address issues of memory, language and identity.

Recent individual exhibitions include 'a tale of Europeans', at the Natural History Museum, Vienna,  and Universalmuseum Joanneum/Natural History Museum, Graz, Austria (2017). She has taken part in collective exhibitions at the Jerwood Space, London, UK (2017); Metropolitan Arts Centre, Belfast, UK (2016); Kunstraum Niederösterreich, Vienna, Austria (2016), among others.  Mendes has been the recipient of several awards for her works in performance, video, photography and literature, including the Jerwood Drawing Prize 2017, second prize winner, London, UK; MAC International 2016, finalist, The MAC, Belfast, UK (2016); fellowship Akademie Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart, Germany, 2015-2017 and Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Lisbon, Portugal (2010/11, 2013 and 2016).
