Lecture with Iaspis Studio Grant Holder Robel Temesgen at Moderna Museet in Malmö

Date: Wednesday, May 24 Time: 4pm-6pm Place: Moderna Museet Malmö Address: Ola Billgrens plats 2–4, Malmö Language: English

Artist Robel Temesgen, whose work encompasses painting, performance, conversation, installation and hand written newspapers, presents his latest projects that involve social engagement. Under the title ‘Dialoguing the Social’, the artist will reflect the connections between his artistic strategies and the existing social, political and economic context in Ethiopia. Among others, he will introduce ‘wax and gold’, a traditional literary approach used to express double-meaning, covering the gold (the core message) with the wax (the diverging message). His participatory practice is based on the wax and gold tactics and strategic engagement and ranges from one day events, collaborative workshops to ongoing projects. The talk will be followed by a Q&A with the audience.

Robel Temesgen (b. 1987, Ethiopia) received MFA in Contemporary Art from Tromsø Academy of Contemporary Art and Creative Writing, University of Tromsø, Norway in 2015 and a BFA in Painting from ASFAD, Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia in 2010. His practice focuses on painting and encompasses elements of performance, installation, video and collaborative projects. Since 2010, Temesgen is a Lecturer at the Department of Painting, Alle School of Fine Arts and Design, Addis Ababa University. His work has been exhibited in Ethiopia and internationally.
