Lecture: CIRCA (Cairo International Resource Center for Art) - On Being an Institution with Sarah Rifky

Date: Tuesday, April 24
Time: 6 pm
Place: Iaspis, The Swedish Arts Grants Committee, Maria skolgata 83, 2nd floor

Sarah Rifky will talk about being an institution, and institution building as a curatorial act. She is the founding director of CIRCA, which she describes as follows:
“CIRCA is a flexible institution that wishes and actively works on promoting and furthering the study, creation and dissemination of contemporary art and its discourses in Egypt and internationally. It is a renewable idea, which manifests in various events, actions, works and encounters in time. CIRCA - as institution - is born out of a necessity for increased autonomy in what we do, and becoming attune to our circadian rhythm towards finding a framework for what we do in relation to art, in Egypt. “

Sarah Rifky lives, writes, curates and teaches in Cairo, Egypt and elsewhere. She has been Curator of the Townhouse Gallery of Contemporary Art since 2009 and has taught at the American University in Cairo and MASS Alexandria in 2010. Rifky studied Visual Art and Mass Communication at the American University in Cairo and received her MFA in Critical Studies from the Malmö Art Academy, Lund University in Sweden.

Currently she holds a studio grant at Iaspis in Stockholm.

The talk is part of a series of lectures at Iaspis by international artist led initiatives setting up frameworks for engagement exceeding individual practice. The emphasis of the series is on self-organized structures emanating from specific needs and circumstances rather than reproducing conventional formats.
