Lecture: Cátedra Arte de Conducta (Behavior Art Department 2002 - 2009) with Tania Bruguera

Time: Monday April 16, 6 pm
Place: The Project Room, Iaspis, The Swedish Arts Grants Committee, Maria skolgata 83, Stockholm

Tania Bruguera is one of the leading political performance artists of her generation, well known for her works that pivots around issues of power and control. Her lecture at Iaspis will focus on Cátedra Arte de Conducta, the first performance and time based art studies program in Latinamerica. Cátedra Arte de Conducta was founded 2002 by Tania Bruguera and it is inspired by her own art practice with the artform Arte de Conducta (Behavior Art).

Cátedra Arte de Conducta (Behavior Art Department - 2002-2009) emerged like a piece of public art intended to create a space of alternative training to the system of art studies in contemporary Cuban society. Tania Bruguera describes it as a Long Term Project focused on the discussion and analysis of sociopolitical behavior and the understanding of art as an instrument for the transformation of ideology through the activation of civic action on its environment. It was created as a space for the practice of Arte de Conducta, and its actions that aims to transform some spaces in society through art.

The lecture is part of a series of talks at Iaspis by international artist led initiatives setting up frameworks for engagement exceeding individual practice. The emphasis of the series is on self-organized structures emanating from specific needs and circumstances rather than reproducing conventional formats. The next lecture will be held April 24 by Sarah Rifky about CIRCA.

The lecture by Tania Bruguera is made in collaboration with Svenska Konstkritikersamfundet (Swedish AICA).
