Exhibition with Siri Tolander, Iaspis Studio Grantholder in Cape Town

2019-03-08
Useless in Cape Town, by Siri Tolander. Opening Friday 22 March 2019, 6 - 8 pm. Opening hours on Sunday 24th and Monday 25th, 2 - 4 pm. Address: 47 - 49 Greatmore Street Woodstock, Cape Town.
Siri Tolander is a Swedish artist living and working in Stockholm who is currently visiting Greatmore Studios. In her artistic practice she is working with or in relation to public space. The installations and sculptures represent both a dystopic and utopic outlook upon her surroundings and are inspired by crude material, specific sites, and the view upon the city as an organic construction. She tries to understand and decipher what she meets by moving through spaces, testing different materials and both challenge and use her own fears and preconceptions.
Useless in Cape Town is an exhibition about the notion of security, its visual language and how it effects oneself and the experience of safety, mobility and freedom. Coming from Sweden the amount of constructions regarding safety such as gates, barb wire, fences and panic buttons is quite a different and somewhat intimidating reality and questions about what they do to our perception on personal and public space arises. What is most important, to keep things in or out? And who holds the power?
